English Language Arts Lesson- Sixties Scoop
As a class, we read Michael Hutchinson's The Case of the Missing Auntie: A Mighty Muskrats Mystery. This novel is not only by a First Nations author but it also features First Nations characters and issues. This particular one addresses the Sixties Scoop. This event is where First Nations children were taken from their families and adopted out to other families to assimilate them. In this lesson, students have introduced to this event as well as the word "assimilation." Initially, students were confused about this word, but when used in connection to Residential Schools (which they had prior knowledge of) it clicked. Moreover, this lesson did not only teach them about the Sixties Scoop but did so through telling a story. By doing this, it connects to the First Peoples Principles of Learning that the BC Curriculum endeavours to include in lessons.
